    Predictions of Future Global Climate

    Bali, the famed Island of the Gods, stakes a serious claim to be paradise on earth, with its varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces, and barren volcanic hillsides all providing a picturesque backdrop to its colorful, deeply spiritual, and unique culture.
    Temperature is the basic measurement indicator for describing the climate. There is a 1.18° Celsius increase in global temperature since 1880 and Nineteen of the warmest years have occurred since 2000. The main reason for increasing temperature is release of carbon dioxide and other green house gases into atmosphere. It this continues, the average global temperature will rise up to 4° C by 2100. On taking necessary actions to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, the temperature is predicted to rise only up to 1° Celsius.
    Increase in global temperature leads to increase in evaporation rate. Rapid evaporation causes more water vapour to be present in the atmosphere which will lead to more precipitation. For each degree of warming the precipitation increases by 1% to 3%. The changes in precipitation will not be evenly distributed. Some location the precipitation will be more and for others it will be less. By the year 2100, there is at least 1% to maximum of 12% increase in precipitation.
    Global warming causes the sea level to rise by two factors, 1) melting of ice sheets and glaciers contributes to rising sea level and 2) seawater expands as it warms, which increases the volume and rises the sea level. The sea level rose about 21-24 cm since 1880. If we fail to act fast, the climate models predict that the sea level will rise between 30-100 cm by the year 2100. The rising sea level is a great threat to wetlands, coastal communities, and coral reefs.
    Due to human activities such as burning of fossil fuel, deforestation etc, there is an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. Oceans act as a buffer and absorbs about 30% of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When carbon dioxide dissolves in sea water, it combines to form carbonic acid (Weak acid) that breaks into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions. This process reduced the ocean pH. If the ocean continues to absorb more carbon dioxide, the pH further decreases, and the ocean becomes more acidic. Higher Acidity in the ocean is a threat to marine organisms.
